As mayor Dragana Sotirovski stated, so far is only known that the largest furniture retailer in the world purchased 14 hectares of space in the Čamurlija industrial zone. Neither the City of NIš nor the IKEA company reveal what exactly they are preparing, and the Office for Local Development says that IKEA continues its project and is waiting for a letter of intent, reports ekapija.com.
For years, the arrival of the most famous furniture production company in Nis, which, as far as Serbia is concerned, only has its sales outlet in Belgrade, has been awaited. Mayor Dragana Sotirovski said at the penultimate session of the City Assembly, as well as at the annual conference, that they had meetings with representatives of the Swedish company.
Earlier, at the session of the Assembly, she said that they had agreed on deadlines with IKEA representatives, but she did not reveal them.
IKEA did not want to reveal the details either.
"For us at IKEA, the Serbian market is very important, and we recognize that it has a lot of potential. We're constantly looking for ways to bring our range and home improvement solutions to as many customers as possible, but we can't reveal much at this time. As soon as more information about further development is available, we will be happy to share it," said the IKEA company to Južne Vesti.
The arrival of the IKEA company in Niš was announced in 2009, 2010, 2011, and in March 2012, when the then president of Serbia, Boris Tadić, said that one of the company's five stores should be in Niš. In February 2013, the then-mayor of Niš, Zoran Perišić, stated that the Swedish company's facilities would be built near the road leading to the Niš village of Čamurlija. In 2019, an IKEA delivery center was opened in Niš.
