BMW remained the most successful German premium brand in 2022. With 2,100,692 vehicles sold (5.1 percent fewer than in 2021), BMW is ahead of the German competition. Mercedes reports global deliveries of 2,043,900 units (minus 1.0% for 2022), and Audi is far behind with 1,614,231 units (minus 3.9%). All three brands therefore recorded a decline compared to the previous year but are optimistic for 2023, according to reports on

BMW also leads the way when it comes to selling fully electric cars; the BMW brand alone had electric vehicle sales of 172,011 units (72% growth) in 2022, leaving both Mercedes (117,800, +124%) and Audi (118,196, +44.3%) far behind.

BMW Group's overall sales in 2022 fell by 4.8%, following a 5.1% drop in demand for BMW models, while MINI saw a 3% decrease. On the other hand, Rolls-Royce had a record year, and the same goes for BMW M.

In fact, the M division had its best 12 months ever. With 177,257 cars delivered between January and December 2022, BMW M set a new annual record. Sales increased by 8.4% compared to the also-record 2021, when 163,542 vehicles were sold.

The year 2022 was also the year BMW M celebrated its 50th anniversary.
