During the first three months of this year, 11,717 foreigners received work permits in Serbia, while according to the data of the National Employment Service (NES), 35,168 permits were issued throughout last year, which is about 12,000 more than in 2021.

The most work permits this year were issued to citizens of China, Russia, Turkey, India, Cuba, Macedonia, Ukraine, and Nepal, and workers from the countries of the region—Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro—are also at the top of the list. The majority of foreign workers are engaged in the construction industry, reports the portal gradjevinarstvo.rs.

"The largest number of foreign workers in the previous year was primarily engaged in the construction industry. These are different profiles of construction workers – bricklayers, ironworkers, auxiliary laborers, plasterers, and carpenters. A large number of permits were also issued for welders. Also, a greater number of work permits were issued to IT experts from various areas of IT activity," Zoran Martinović, director of the NES, told Blic.

Many foreign nationals are engaged as auxiliary workers in various branches of the economy, such as service activities, catering, and hotel management. As for professional education, most workers have third, fourth, or seventh degrees, but there are also a lot of low-skilled workers.
