According to the announcement of Goran Vesić, Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, it will take only two hours and 45 minutes from Belgrade to Budapest by high-speed train in the middle of 2025.

The minister told TV Prva that the railway between Subotica and Novi Sad is being built on a large scale, reports gradjevinarstvo.rs.

"That railroad should be completed in 2024. It was due in 2025, but the deadlines were shortened in agreement with the contractors. The Hungarians will also finish their part by the end of 2024, so by mid-2025 we will have a high-speed train. You will be able to get from Belgrade to the capital of Hungary in two hours and 45 minutes. There will be no stopping at the border, because the Hungarian customs will be in Belgrade and the Serbian customs in Budapest," said Vesić.

He expects that an agreement will be reached during January on the construction of the Belgrade-Niš high-speed railway.

"The European Union will provide 600 million euros, so part of the funds will come from the European Investment Bank and part from the budget, so in 2028/29 we will have a fast railway to Niš," Vesić said, adding that a high-speed railway from Niš to Preševo will also be built, so we will have a high-speed railway through the entire country. He added that some more routes will be built, and many will be reconstructed, especially the Belgrade-Bar and Niš-Dimitrovgrad railways.

"The lifetime of railroads is 25 years. In addition to the construction of new ones, the plan is to reconstruct about 1,200 kilometers of railway. It is clear that there are railroads older than 25 years; it is important to reconstruct the existing ones. The average speed of trains in Serbia is currently 60 kilometers per hour, and until a few years ago it was 42 kilometers per hour. Since 2012, 108 kilometers of new railway have been built, and another 156 kilometers are under construction. Since 2015, significant investments in railroads have started," Vesić emphasized.

As for road construction, Vesić said that many projects are underway, that the ring road around Belgrade will be completed soon, and the ring road that will include Pančevo should be completed in four years.
